It doesn’t take much to make me start talking baseball.
Last week I was preparing for a phone interview with a Vietnam veteran in Iowa. Of course, my mind drifted to thoughts of an Iowa cornfield where a farmer has decided to build a baseball stadium.
Field of Dreams, a 1989 sports fantasy drama starring Kevin Costner, is among the best baseball movies ever. An actual baseball field, Field of Dreams, was built for the movie of the same name. The pop-culture tourist attraction is in Dubuque County, Iowa,
In the movie Costner’s character, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice whispering “If you build it, he will come” while walking through his cornfield one evening. He sees a vision of a baseball diamond in the cornfield and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson standing in the middle. Believing in him, Kinsella’s wife, Annie, lets him plow under part of their corn crop to build a baseball field, at risk of financial hardship.
I’ve seen parts of the movie but have never watched it all the way through. My favorite baseball movie is The Natural, the classic 1984 flick starring Robert Redford.
This is just the beginning of the best time of the year, baseball season. It’s a fever worth catching.
