Final Salute: Retired Sgt. Keith Chance, 60

Retired Sgt. Keith Chance, of Huntsville, a Redstone Arsenal gate guard, died May 14. He was 60.

Chance retired from military service after a combined 22 years in the Army and Alabama Army National Guard. He spent seven years on active duty with assignments in Germany with Bravo Troop, 3/12th Cavalry, 3rd Armored Division, and South Korea, with the 72nd Armor, 2nd Infantry Division. He served as a M60A3 tank gunner and mastered the weapons system to distinguish himself as one of the top gunners in his unit.

The remainder of his service was in the National Guard, where he spent five years in Panama, serving an important role during the retrograde and turnover of the Panama Canal back to the country. Chance worked 18 years as a Department of the Army security guard, providing security at Redstone Arsenal.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Franchesca; children Jason, Brittany, Gigi, Lizy and Analia; and seven grandchildren.
