Maj. Tom Boehm of Redstone Arsenal is the distinguished honor graduate of the latest class from the Command and General Staff Officer Course.

Fifty-three field grade officers from throughout the Army took the four-month course which concluded with graduation Dec. 20 at Heiser Hall.

“We’re proud of them for completing this very demanding course,” Clay Newton, campus director of the Command and General Staff School at Redstone, said.

Boehm, in the Army 11 years, is a project pilot in the Aviation Flight Test Directorate at the Redstone Test Center. He arrived in June from Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Maryland, where the Army’s experimental test pilots are trained.

“It was great,” Boehm, 33, from Naples, Florida, said of the Redstone course. “It was good bonding experience and learning to understand how the Army runs, and work in collaborative group settings with my peer group. And excellent instructors.”

The top 10 percent distinguished graduates included Capt. Travis De Sousa, Capt. Brian Haley, Maj. David Preczewski and Maj. Christopher Stump. Like Boehm, Haley is an experimental test pilot at the Redstone Test Center.

“It’s really a great accomplishment by the entire class because these are the future battalion command level leaders in the Army,” RTC Commander Col. Steve Braddom, who attended the graduation, said. “We’re proud of their accomplishment. For Maj. Boehm and Capt. Haley, we’re looking forward to having them as part of the RTC family and Team Redstone.”

The graduates heard from guest speaker Maj. Gen. Paul Pardew, commander of the Army Contracting Command. Pardew recalled that he graduated from the course 16 and a half years ago at the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He had three key messages for these graduates: leading and learning; refining your leadership style; and balance.

“Each and every one of you are going to have to be able to seek out what balance means to you and your families,” Pardew said.

Among the graduates was Maj. Jason Roach, executive officer for the Army National Guard G-4 (logistics) at the National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C. “It is information that can be and will be utilized going forward in my military career,” Roach, 40, from Whitesville, West Virginia, said.

“It was well-rounded,” graduate Capt. Katie Munoz, 32, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, said. “I mostly enjoyed being able to network with peers of different branches and being able to glean from their experiences. The MP (military police) world can be very insular so it’s nice to be able to network and gain another branch’s perspective.”

She will report to her new assignment as operations officer for the 4th Infantry Division Provost Marshal Office at Fort Carson, Colorado.

The Command and General Staff School, at Fort Leavenworth, educates and develops leaders for full spectrum, joint, interagency and multinational operations. About 1,700 officers have graduated from the Redstone Arsenal Satellite Campus which opened January 2010. The other three satellite campuses include Fort Belvoir and Fort Lee, in Virginia, and Fort Gordon, Georgia.

The student leaders presented their class gift to Col. Scott Green, the director of the Command and General Staff School. It was a framed portrait of the class along with its members’ branch designations.
