Starting Saturday, Gate 8 will no longer be 24 hours and will instead revert to pre-COVID-19 hours of 5:30 a.m. to

9 p.m. daily.

The changes to Gate 8 come as more guards will be moved to Gate 3 Redstone Road, which will be open starting April 12, Monday through Friday from

5:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for inbound traffic and from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for outbound traffic.

As a result of the changes, Gate 9 will be the only 24-hour installation access point after April 12, while Gate 10 Patton Road will remain closed.

Gates 1 and 7 will remain the same. Gate 1 hours are Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Gate 7 hours are from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for inbound traffic and from 5:30 a.m. to

9 p.m. for outbound traffic.

During the March 25 Garrison Facebook Town Hall, Garrison Commander Col. Glenn Mellor took the opportunity to remind Team Redstone about which gates cyclists should use when accessing the installation.

“Redstone tenant employees who would like to cycle on the installation can access Gate 9 during non-peak hours Monday through Friday and weekends,” Mellor said. “Guests of Redstone Arsenal without a common access card or RFID card can access the installation through Gate 8 during gate hours.”

Facial recognition lanes, which launched as part of a facial recognition pilot program on March 15, are a recent change to the gates. At Gate 9, lanes three and four are facial recognition lanes as well as lane three at Gate 1.

There are several things to keep in mind with the facial recognition technology, Garrison Deputy Operation Director Scott Gillespie said at the March 25 town hall.

“Masks and hats can interfere with the facial recognition technology and should be avoided,” Gillespie said. “Anything reflective in the cab of your vehicle can cause issues due to glare and the dashboard should be free of anything that shields the driver’s face.”

Gillespie said drivers should proceed through the designated facial recognition lanes at a speed of 5-7 mph and have the window rolled down so the guards can confirm the driver identity with the facial recognition technology.

Redstone Arsenal employees can access quick gate information by using the Digital Garrison mobile app, which can be downloaded on Android and Apple devices.

“The best way to get information about gate closures, weather alerts and installation information is to download and use the Digital Garrison app,” Mellor said.
