Employees and visitors to Redstone Arsenal may be able to ditch their masks soon if certain conditions are met and the leadership agrees.
Garrison Commander Col. Glenn Mellor gave a COVID-19 update Thursday.
“Since the highpoint we saw on 3 September, where we had over 100 cases per 100,000, we are well below that now,” Mellor said. “We’re seeing a steady decline right now of COVID cases around the area.”
He said two things must happen for the mask mandate to be lifted on post.
The number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people needed to be in the moderate range, which is anything below 49 and the percent positive rate must be below 7.99%.
At the time of the town hall, the COVID-19 cases per 100,000 was between 40-44, but the transmission rate was around 13%, according to Mellor.
“We’re getting closer,” he said.
When those conditions are met and the post’s leaders decide it’s time to do away with the masks, Mellor said it would revert to the previous procedures that allowed fully vaccinated individuals to forgo wearing a mask.
