As the school year winds down, summer camp at Redstone Arsenal is revving up with lots of fun plans for area children.

Deborah Nickles, Outreach Services director at Child and Youth Services, said campers are divided into groups based on their current grades in school, from kindergarten to grade 12.

Camp will begin on May 31, the Tuesday after the Memorial Day holiday, and run through July 29, she said.

Registration is underway for the camps, which are divided into weeks. Campers may sign up for one week, any other number of weeks, or for the entire program, based on availability.

Pricing varies from week to week and is based on a sliding scale for active-duty military and DOD civilians, and a flat fee for contractors and military retirees, per Department of Defense guidelines.

Summer camps provide children with socializing, sports, crafts, games and field trips, which this year will include bowling, skating, Point Mallard and the Main Event (an amusement center) for middle school and teenage campers.

Field trips for school-age children will include trips to Altitude Trampoline Park, Insanity Complex (an entertainment and skating center), Stars and Strikes (a bowling center), Cook’s Museum of Natural Science in Decatur and more, Nickles said.

Registration takes place in person at CYS, building 3443 on Aerobee Road, during regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Parents of children kindergarten through grade five must first sign up on a wait list at and indicate which weeks they are interested in. When they are offered a slot, parents have 48 hours to respond in MCC. Once they accept the slot, they will need to come into Parent Central Services to register and enroll into summer camp.

There is no wait list for children in grades 6-12, Nickles said.

A calendar listing of all activities will be provided at registration.

There is no official cutoff date for camp registration, but there are a limited amount of spaces so parents are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Camp hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. and no outside food or drinks are allowed.

School Age Services summer camp orientation is May 24 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
