One local church did not let the bad weather Nov. 11 deter them from their mission of thanking local veterans.
Madison Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) modified their annual steak and potato dinner for veterans into a pizza and cookies drive-thru giveaway. The church gave away 100 pizzas and packages of cookies on Veterans Day at their campus at 1400 Hughes Road in Madison.
“It’s really cool that they are still coming (in the rain),” organizer Lucy Samuelson said. “I love when things work out at our little church.”
Volunteers Kenneth and Janine Jordan stopped by the church for a pizza but decided to stay and help hand out the pizza to grateful veteran families. One daughter of a veteran said she was picking up a pizza for her elderly father who was homebound.
Coming off a successful Halloween drive-by candy handout, the church turned its focus to Veterans Day and their plan to give out free Papa Murphy pizzas and cookies. Samuelson joked that her SUV smelled like pizza but it was worth it. They hope to restart the steak and baked potato dinner for Veterans Day 2021.
The church has already begun their next outreach: collecting enough Toys for Tots to fill the church van to the brim. Anyone wishing to volunteer an unwrapped toy can bring it to the church office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The church’s heart for service has not been diminished by the COVID-19 pandemic, as they have found ways to still give to the community.
“We are small but mighty,” Samuelson said with a smile.
