As hunting season approaches, it’s time for new and returning hunters on Redstone Arsenal to prepare by attending a Hunter Orientation Course, along with getting their licenses, certificates, permits and other paperwork together.
“We have 38,000 beautiful acres here and it’s a privilege to be able to enjoy nature and unplug,” Tom Pyburn said. He’s the manager of Outdoor Recreation, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
One requirement to hunt on the installation is the completion of the Redstone Arsenal Hunter Orientation Course, which is free and no registration required. Pyburn said the class will be offered at 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Aug. 29, Oct. 3 and Nov. 27. A spring class will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2020. All Thursday courses will be held at Heiser Hall, building 3712 on Patton Road.
For those who can’t attend on Thursday, the course will also be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 31, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 21. All Saturday classes will be held at Outdoor Recreation, 5139 Sportsman Drive.
“We are excited about the upcoming hunting season,” Pyburn said. “A big part of that is making sure our hunters hunt safely and that’s why we hold mandatory courses so that everyone gets new information and updates. It also makes sure that everyone keeps safety in the forefront of their mind.”
The course includes updates from a game warden and a Garrison biologist, along with covering the do’s and don’ts of hunting on Redstone.
“We also go over information about unexploded ordnance and safety. It’s rare to come across it, but there’s always a possibility,” Pyburn said. “We look forward to seeing the seasoned hunters and new faces who come and enjoy our program. We’re like a family here.”
It’s a big family. Annually there are between 400 and 500 people who hunt on Redstone Arsenal. The season starts with early goose season, followed by dove season, Pyburn said. Deer is the biggest draw, but there are many who enjoy small game season for squirrels and rabbits. There’s also waterfowl and turkey seasons.
