Physical fitness opportunities abound at Redstone Arsenal.

Gaylene Wilson, chief of the recreation division, wants to put the word out about the many options patrons have to stay fit, including two gymnasiums, an outdoor Frisbee Golf course, and a number of hiking and biking trails.

“We want to let people know that we’re here,” Wilson said.

Pagano Gym on Honest John Road (next to the “One Stop”) and Col. Stephen K. Scott Fitness Center on Digney Road (just behind Martin Road near Army Materiel Command, the Garrison headquarters building, and NASA) are two options for those who want to take advantage of a structured workout setting and state-of-the-art equipment.

Both offer rowing machines, treadmills, ellipticals, bicycles and free weights, Wilson said, adding that both also have shower and locker rooms so users can store their belongings while working out.

Equipment has been spaced apart as a COVID-19 safety measure, and cleaning the equipment is a paramount priority at both facilities, Wilson said.

“We’re doing a diligent job making sure all of the equipment is sanitized,” she said, adding that masks must be worn at all times as a measure “to keep staff and customers safe.”

One exception to the mask rule is while using cardio equipment, but masks must be placed back on upon completion of a cardio workout, she said.

For those who want to stay fit but remain outdoors, Redstone Arsenal has numerous options, including a basketball court near Scott Fitness Center, a Frisbee Golf course near Vincent Drive, and several trails for walking, hiking or biking. A map of the trails can be found on the MWR website, Wilson said.

Hours at Pagano Gym are 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Hours at Scott Fitness Center are 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

After-hour access is available at Scott Fitness Center for eligible users. Registration is required and an agreement must be signed, but access is then allowed 24-7, Wilson said.

There is no fee for most eligible users, including active duty military and their family members, retirees and their family members, and federal employees.

Contractors are eligible to use the facilities with an MWR membership. Cost for that varies, depending on the type of membership.

“We’re here. We have plenty of opportunities,” she said. “Come and visit us.”
