The Drake Avenue bridge at Huntsville Spring Branch is now named the Lance Cpl. Larry G. Clark Memorial Bridge.

The bridge was dedicated March 8 in honor of the Huntsville native Marine who was killed in Vietnam on Feb. 4, 1968. Lance Cpl. Larry Gene Clark, a fire team leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division, died in a firefight. He was 21.

Clark lived near Spring Branch and as a boy he would hunt, fish and trap along that creek.

Don Cox, a boyhood friend, spoke during the dedication ceremony conducted by the City of Huntsville.

“How thankful I am personally to have known Larry Clark and to have considered him my best friend as we were growing up,” Cox said.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle thanked the attendees and said, “This is a special day for us.”

Terry Rust, Clark’s nephew, and JoAnn Bolden, an aunt, helped unveil the bridge sign.

“This is a great, great honor. I’m tickled to have this for him because this was his stomping grounds when he was growing up,” Rust said.

“Just trying to hold it together,” Bolden said of her emotions. “Great honor.”
