A week after falling to the defending champions, the Fly-Outs faced last year’s runner-up.
They were ready this time.
Taylor Reed and Sam Smith had three hits apiece as the Fly-Outs beat Hit Circus, 16-6 on April 29 at NASA softball field 1. The Fly-Outs turned a close game into a rout with four runs in the bottom of the third and six in the fourth.
“First few games we try to knock the rust off,” player/coach Richard Jackson said. “Came out and finally got the ball down a little bit. Shored up the defense and started having fun.”
Reed, the leadoff hitter, went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Smith, batting 12th and last in the lineup, also went 3-for-3 and had three RBIs and two runs.
Dustin Deason, Jay Napp, pitcher Duane Mize and Chris Ragucci had two hits apiece for the Fly-Outs (1-1). They lost their opener to We Dem Boys, the three-time defending champions of Division A, on April 22.
Against Hit Circus, the score was tied 1-1 after two innings. Fly-Outs led 5-1 after three innings and 11-2 after four. Mize pitched the five-inning win for the Fly-Outs (1-1).
Michael Barger pitched for Hit Circus (1-1). Cory Efird, Jeff Klop, Phillip Bitzer and Jonathan Grizzard had two hits apiece.
“I think we’ve got to start hitting the ball,” Hit Circus player/coach Tony Fiorucci said. “They hit the ball well, we did not. That was the difference.”
