The USA Patriots amputee softball team members are looking forward to being back Friday.
They’ll be here for their annual exhibition showcase, this time on 9/11. The team will play Friday night at 7:30 at Toyota Field in Madison.
“We’re really looking forward to it because we’ve only had one event this year. And that was really early before the COVID hit. That was in North Dakota,” USA Patriots coach Randall Raper, from Hackleburg which is in Marion County, said. “We haven’t had anything since. We’re really looking forward to this. Hopefully we can get everybody here without any delays.”
This team of former service members who have lost limbs in combat is based in Norfolk, Virginia, and has players from throughout the country.
Gates open for this tribute night at 5:30 p.m. A pregame meet-and-greet with the players is from 6-7 for photos and autographs. Presentation of the colors is by the Alabama A&M University ROTC color guard. The national anthem will be sung by Navy veteran Christopher Baxter.
The first pitch is 7:30. The USA Patriots will play an exhibition game against members of Team BeArded WARRIORS. At the conclusion of the game, postgame fireworks will be provided by Pyro Works.
Team BeArded WARRIORS, this year’s event sponsor, consists of local veterans, firefighters and law enforcement.
