I rolled up to the ballpark an hour early. Like Aerosmith, I just didn’t want to miss a thing.
It was Monday, April 5, the first day of preseason games for the 55-and-over Rockets league in Huntsville Senior Softball. With the season starting April 12, games are Monday and Thursday evenings on fields 1 and 2 at Brahan Spring Park.
I’m particularly stoked about this season because of the addition of a sixth team. More than a dozen new players have signed up after learning about the league in the sports section of the Redstone Rocket.
We started covering the league every week last year because it was literally the only game in town. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center postponed its sports seasons at Redstone since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020.
It’s gratifying to know we played a role in expanding the popularity of senior softball in Huntsville. The competition is good. The players are having fun and the friendships are real. After every game, members of both teams converge in the infield and share a heartfelt prayer. These are good people. I’ve met lifelong friends and I look forward to seeing these athletes each week.
