The 55-and-over Rockets league will launch on time this year.
Last year this league in Huntsville Senior Softball started late because of the pandemic but the players are already practicing for a spring season liftoff in April.
“I think everybody is excited about playing from the beginning this year,” league director Chris Maggio said. “Because of the COVID last year, we started in June instead of in April. I think the teams will be competitive like always. Everybody has a good time, good exercise.”
League play will start April 5 on field 2 in Brahan Spring Park. There will be two games nightly on Mondays and Thursdays at 6 and 7:30.
“We are going to have a split season this year,” Maggio said. “We’re going to have a spring season and then a summer season.”
The spring season will crown a champion about the Fourth of July week and culminate with a single-elimination tournament.
The summer season will start the week after the Fourth of July, continue until after Labor Day and culminate with its single-elimination tournament.
“We are hoping for five teams again,” Maggio said. “I know we’ve been getting probably about 25 people at practice. We need at least 60 to 65 people.”
He said several new players have joined from Redstone Arsenal.
The teams and their coaches include: Maroon, with coach Maggio; Green, with Jeff Abbott; defending champion Red, with Phil Haas; Royal Blue, with Bob Thompson; and runner-up Navy Blue, with Larry Guthrie.
“We’re always welcoming new players,” Maggio said.
Huntsville Senior Softball is recruiting players for the spring. The three leagues include: Rockets, 55-and-up; Recreation, 63-and-up; and Triads, 71-and-up.
