Alysse Bishop scored the winning basket with 18 seconds left.
Her driving layup lifted the Court Controllers over RTC 50-49 on Dec. 9 at the Marshall Wellness Center. This was the new team’s first win.’
“We did it with a lot of hustle and teamwork,” Bishop, the team captain, said. “This means people better watch out because we’re going to be pretty good.”
She finished with 10 points and two 3-pointers for the Court Controllers (1-1). Her brother, Reggie Bishop, had 13 points. Their dad, Anthony Bishop, also had 10 points with two 3-pointers.
RTC (1-2) led 23-20 at halftime but couldn’t stay ahead down the stretch.
Juan Hall, RTC captain, had a game-high 20 with three 3-pointers. Henry Scruggs added 11.
“It was a tight game,” Hall said. “We just didn’t close it out.”
Mavericks 93, Monstars 35: Lee “Smitty” Smith scored 25 points as the defending champion Mavericks bounced back from their first loss in two years.
Kenneth Davis had 17 for the Mavericks (2-1). Lorenzo “Zo” Burks had 15 on five 3-pointers. Team captain Mike Baez added 14 with four 3-pointers.
“We pressured them and made them turn it over a lot,” Baez said. The Mavericks, which lost Dec. 5 to Space Jam 66-57, led 48-16 at halftime. They won the 2018-19 Division A championship and finished unbeaten at 17-0.
Spencer Matonis had 13 points and Adam Molloy 12 for the Monstars (1-2).
