The high-powered We Dem Boyz weren’t used to being shutout in the first two innings.
But they scored five runs in the third and went on to beat Brew Crew, 10-4 in Thursday’s semifinal in the Division A tournament. The three-time defending champions sent two home runs over the NASA softball field fence in left center in the sixth.
Tybo Butler and Gary Benjamin homered for We Dem Boyz (11-1). The tournament’s top seed advanced to the final scheduled Monday at 5 p.m.
“It took a few innings but I kept telling the team we’ve got to score a few runs, put a little pressure on them,” Butler, the player/coach, said. “With outstanding pitching from Vince Fails, we were able to go a few innings without them scoring until our bats came around.”
Butler went 4-for-4 with a homer, a triple, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Austen Young, Michael Harris, Fails, Garrett Williams and Andrew Broadfoot added two hits apiece. Winning pitcher Fails allowed four runs, three earned, on 12 hits with one strikeout and one walk in seven innings.
Brew Crew (7-6), a first-year team which split their two games against We Dem Boyz in the regular season, dropped to the losers’ bracket.
Player/coach Matt Pensa, Hunter Olive, Michael McCreless, Quentin Harris and John Michael had two hits apiece. Left-hander Kyle Mann took the loss.
“Played great defense. Just couldn’t get the bats going,” Pensa said. “Pitcher (Mann) pitched a great game.”
