Larry Guthrie does his usual pregame ritual as player/coach for the navy blue team. He puts himself last in the lineup and playing shortstop.
On this night, he also fills the role of most valuable player.
Guthrie drove in seven runs with four hits, including three doubles, as navy blue outslugged maroon 20-13. The game was Oct. 5 on field 2 at Brahan Spring Park in the five-team, 55-and-over Rockets league in Huntsville Senior Softball.
“We played much better (than in navy blue’s previous game, a loss),” Guthrie said. “We just hit well. We hit well. Played defense a little bit.”
Defensively he started the 6-4-3 double play that ended the game in the bottom of the seventh. He also started the 6-4-3 double play that ended the second.
Don Shook and David Stumbaugh added four hits apiece for navy blue (12-7). Reid Pincomb and Bobby Upton had three hits apiece. Jerry Cowan, Darnell Ford and Derek Santiago contributed two hits apiece. Cowan pitched the first two innings. Left-hander Michael Gundersen pitched the last five and got the win.
Moto Miller hit a three-run homer for maroon (9-10). Tim Lawter, Dave Battiste and Bill Santi had three hits apiece. Mark Hoffman and player/coach Chris Maggio added two hits apiece. Denny Reasner took the loss.
“They outhit us,” Maggio said.
