The first two games of the season weren’t kind to the first-year softball team from defense contractor Thompson Gray.
Four players went down with injuries, three requiring surgery. But this 15-member team persevered in the Redstone coed league.
Thompson Gray (5-8) reeled off three straight wins in the Division B-3 tournament and advanced to this week’s final.
“We struggled (early) getting a healthy lineup,” player/coach Ashley Lipham, who recovered from knee surgery, said. “Now we have played a few games together and we’ve started jelling and putting hits together. That has resulted in wins.
“We hope to finish it out with a first-year trophy.”
Thompson Gray advanced from Thursday’s semifinal on a forfeit from the Swingers (4-8). After their first-round win over Yulista, they beat the Mudhens, 12-6 in round two. That game was completed Aug. 13 after it was suspended in the fourth inning because of weather Aug. 1. Thompson Gray’s Andrew Webb hit a two-run homer in the second.
