Youth interested in competitive swimming have until May 21 to register for the Redstone Arsenal Launchers Swim Team.

“This is a good way for kids to experience a swim team atmosphere without a lot of expense or time commitment because it lasts for about a month and a half,” Mike Gates, sports and fitness director for Child and Youth Services, said.

The registration fee is $135 for active duty dependents, and $155 for all others. The fee includes team swimsuit, swim cap and T-shirt. The program is open to the public.

“It’s a good value for people who want to get their kids into swimming and see if they can swim competitively without committing to five nights a week for nine months like you get with a lot of leagues,” Gates said. “It’s also an opportunity for kids to swim and have fun instead of the intensity” that goes along with longer lasting programs.

Fun was the whole idea behind starting the summer league, he said. On average, about 100 youth between the ages of 5 and 17 participate in the program, sponsored by Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the Child and Youth Services.

The swim team will practice at the Redstone Aquatics Center and various city pools throughout Huntsville.

For those interested, May 21 is the last day for registration; and on May 22, a parents meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Pershing Welcome Center, building 3443.

The first day of practice will be May 24 at the Redstone Aquatics Center, building 3705 on Aerobee Road. Practices will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For ages 9 and older, practice will be from 1 to 2:10 p.m. For ages 5 to 8, practice will be from 2:15 to 3 p.m.

Gates said meets are held on Wednesday nights, starting June 5. The team will participate in the City of Huntsville Swim Meet, July 12-14, at the city’s Natatorium.

“It is a fun time, and also gives kids who participate in other sports, like baseball or basketball, an opportunity to work in swimming,” Gates said.
