The Thompson Gray players took every opportunity to sprint around the bases.
They scored five inside-the-park home runs in their 23-19 win over the Trash Pandas for the coed Division B-3 championship Sept. 4. Thompson Gray prevailed in this matchup of first-year teams in the tournament final at NASA softball field 1.
“Just had fun, we had fun,” player/coach Ashley Lipham said. “Didn’t take it too serious. Kept encouraging each other.
“Kept putting hits together. We kept encouraging each other, taking advantage of extra bases.”
Andrew Webb, the left center, went 5-for-5 with three inside-the-park homers, two doubles, seven runs batted in and four runs scored. He played four years of varsity baseball in high school, from 2008-10 at LaRue County High in Hodgenville, Kentucky, and in 2011 at Westminster Christian Academy when he moved here. Webb graduated from the University of Alabama in 2016.
“Tonight we took what they gave us,” Webb said. “Everybody hit and everybody came ready to play.”
Bobby Reuter homered over the left field fence and had two inside-the-park homers. He went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs for Thompson Gray (6-8).
Joe Helfert went 4-for-5 while Lipham and Zac Whitehead had three hits apiece. Winning pitcher Terrell White and Jennifer Kaylor added two hits apiece. Defensively the team turned two double plays to offset some fielding miscues.
Joseph Adinolfi homered for the Trash Pandas (6-9-1). Player/coach Carlos Gomez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs. Anthony Maenza had three hits with a triple. Joseph Talley, Adinolfi, Derek Santiago, Michael Yates, Crystal Santiago and Walter Deitzler had two hits apiece. Crystal Santiago took the loss.
“That’s not a bad score,” Gomez said. “The first two innings on our part, we had popups. On the third and fourth innings, we managed to score due to errors on their part. They realized that we had a weak outfielder so they started placing the ball out there.”
