The Rockets will be ready to roll.

They are the 17U Redstone Rockets, this installation’s 17-and-under basketball team. They held their first practice for the upcoming season Nov. 23 at the Youth Center.

“Working on defense early,” coach Marcus Tolbert said.

This is Tolbert’s seventh year as a volunteer basketball coach at Redstone. He has been a perennial champion since arriving here to work at the Exchange.

His teams won four straight 14U championships and then he moved up with the youngsters to coach them at 17U.

“Love for the game,” Tolbert said of his reason for coaching. “And always helping kids get to that next level.”

Rockets players include point guard Jordan Tims, power forward Jaden Fletcher and shooting guard Alexander Williams.

“It’s going to be a fun season,” Tims, 16, said. “And we’re not going to lose a game.”

“I’m hoping this season will elevate my skills,” Fletcher, 16, said. “And make me better as a player.”

Huntsville’s recreational 14U through 17U teams will play their games at the Moon Complex, the former Grissom High School in southeast Huntsville. The season will start in early January after the holidays.
