At 6-foot-4, Alex Thomas is an imposing hitter in volleyball.
Thomas led the Flying Penguins to a pair of wins Sept. 30 on the west court at the Marshall Wellness Center. The Flying Penguins beat the Rocket City Raptors 27-25, 25-16 and Go Take a Spike 25-10, 25-5.
“It took us a little while to get warmed up,” Thomas said. “But once we got warmed up, we played consistent and we didn’t make too many errors.”
Thomas had six kills, nine aces and two blocks for the Flying Penguins (7-1).
“He’s a wall for us,” teammate Eddie Davidson, who had three aces, said.
John Rogers added seven kills and three aces. Alex Allen made five kills and four aces. Mona Davidson and Tiffany Lockett served four aces apiece. Ben Craigmyle had two kills.
In the night’s third match, the Rocket City Raptors beat Go Take a Spike 25-5, 25-22.
John VanKeuren had five kills, two blocks and four digs for the Rocket City Raptors (4-2). Ellie Pollock made nine aces and four kills. Christopher Burnside had three kills and three aces. Zachary Standridge had three kills and two digs. Jason Bosworth served six aces.
“Could’ve done better but it was fun,” Rocket City Raptors player/captain Adam Butt said between matches. “We all tried hard and played hard. That’s all we can do.”
Casey Funderburk had two kills for Go Take a Spike (1-7). Player/captain Steve Funderburk and Lou Nosenzo made two digs apiece.
“Just weren’t executing, just weren’t getting the ball back over the net,” Steve Funderburk said. “Just need to work together as a team and work our plays.”
