Royal blue had Mother Nature on their side.
They built an early lead and held on to beat gray 13-10 in a rain-shortened game Thursday at field 2 in Brahan Spring Park. The teams play in the 55-and-over Rockets league in Huntsville Senior Softball.
“It’s five innings. It’s an official game,” royal blue player/coach Bob Thomson said while leaving the field in a downpour.
Jorge Marin hit a three-run homer while Jerry Bevel had a two-run shot for royal blue (4-4). Jim “Hitman” Myers pitched all five innings for the win as royal blue snapped a two-game losing streak.
“Tough night pitching with the wind,” Myers said. “And our two big hitters that hit the home runs pulled it out for us.
“The ball was moving all over the place (in the wind when pitched). I try to make it move anyhow but it was moving.”
Marin went 2-for-3 with his homer and five runs batted in. Bevel went 3-for-3 with his homer and three RBIs. Mike Keyser, Pete Mitchell, Derek Santiago and Brian Yarger added two hits apiece.
David Koch went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and three runs scored for gray (4-4). Mike Hoy had three hits but took the loss in the circle. William Kelly, David Key and David McNeill had two hits apiece. Royal blue led 13-5 after four innings.
“We started out really weak, came back in the fifth inning,” gray player/coach Rick Anthis said. “I think we could’ve pulled it out. We just weren’t hitting the ball tonight. Blue team got us this time.”
