Redstone youth sports are ready to get back on the field again.

After the pandemic canceled the swim team and baseball, registration continues until Aug. 24 for soccer and flag football. Flag football, normally held in

the spring, is a separate league from soccer.

“We did not plan on doing it this spring but it would’ve been canceled anyway because of this pandemic,” Mike Gates, youth sports director, said.

Both leagues are coed. Soccer is for ages 5-13 and flag football is for 5-17. They’re looking to start playing about mid-September.

Planned soccer age groups include under-6, U8, U10, U12, and U14 or U-15. Flag football age groups include U6, U8 U10, U12, U14 and U17. Redstone teams play in the Huntsville recreation leagues.

“We will be following all the COVID-19 guidelines from either the state or the city. The city’s already put out practices for safety and we’ll be following all that,” Gates said. “We’ll be trying to be safe.”

The seasons run until the first or second week of November. The pandemic delayed the usual start of fall sports. “Normally we’d already be practicing,” Gates said.

Soccer home games are played at the fields on Goss Road. Flag football might use the fields on Patton Road. Games are usually held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 6 p.m. or later.

Gates believes youth sports can provide some normalcy during these difficult times.

“I think especially now it’s important for them to try to resume some of their normal activities and do it safely,” he said.

Signup for soccer and flag football is at Parent Central Services in the Pershing Welcome Center on Aerobee Road. Call first at 876-3704. A taped message said the current hours for Parent Central Services are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
