Good things come in fours.
We Dem Boyz won their fourth straight Division A championship by beating the Brew Crew, 24-9. They went 3-0 in the postseason tournament, capped by their dominance in the final Aug. 19 at NASA softball field 1.
“Four-peat,” player/coach Brad Harris said. “We accomplished our goal that we set out before the season, to be the first team to four-peat in A Division. Had great pitching by ‘Smurf’ (Vincent Fails) on the mound, great defense and good hitting by our entire team.”
Winning pitcher Vincent “Smurf” Fails contributed to the offense with his home run to left center. He went 4-for-5.
“He pitched me a flat inside pitch and I guess I’m getting my swing back,” Fails said. In homage to the program he works on at the Corps of Engineers, the Energy Resilience Conservation Investment Program, he said “I hit that home run for my ERCIP team.”
Michael Harris, the first baseman, blasted a three-run homer for We Dem Boyz (12-1).
“Just playing together, having fun,” Michael Harris said. “It’s easy when the team all enjoy playing with each other and you’re having fun playing together. It makes it easy.”
“We finally came together as a team and started hitting,” Fails said. “Defense has been there. I kept the ball high pitching-wise and we pulled it out.”
Brew Crew, which gave the champs their only loss in the regular season, finished at 8-7.
“We had a great year,” Brew Crew left fielder Chase Pendley said. “We started off a little slow and then we started coming along. We’re a first-year team so I thought we played well as a team throughout the year. And they hit the ball extremely well today.”
